The Mill Springs Battlefield and Visitor Center connects visitors to this place and to the individuals who fought in the battle. The historic site and the Center interpret, preserve, and honor the events and people associated with the battle, increasing visitors’ appreciation of its impact on the community, Kentucky and the American Civil War.
The Visitor Center located on land adjacent to the National Cemetery where the Union dead from this battle and other veterans from subsequent wars are buried, orients visitors to the power of this place. Introduced to the importance of preserving the site, visitors are able to take advantage of views of both the battlefield and the cemetery. Interactive, multi-layered exhibits recreate the conditions and experiences of the battle, giving visitors the tools to imagine the events of that day. A community center, archive, library and public programs augment the core story, engaging hearts and minds of all ages.
JRA worked very closely with the Kentucky Heritage Council and the board for Mill Springs Battlefield Association to design a building that respected the site but did not falsely imply a historic presence.
