This historic building designed by JRA Architects in 1938, and the addition in 1963 are rich with Art Deco style elements. This 13 story high-rise office building with 10 story wing addition in downtown Frankfort, Kentucky, includes complete restoration and renovation of the exterior and interior.
The building interior includes 384,000 square feet of renovated area. The lower level cafeteria and kitchen will be replaced with new office suites and a new secured accessible entrance from the employee parking. The first floor will have it’s historic finishes restored and existing office areas will become flexible training rooms for the Commonwealth along with a central security station for the building. A restored 214 seat auditorium at this level will feature new seating with tablet arms, power/data for lap top computers, an accessible stage and state-of-the-art audio and video conferencing capabilities. The remaining floors will be designed with open office flexibility with carpet tiles and monolithic acoustical ceilings for flexible tenant layout. A new central core has been efficiently redesigned retaining remnants of the “historic” lobby and connects three banks of renovated elevators, a freight elevator, new accessible toilet rooms, a central kitchenette and egress stairs. JRA worked closely with The Landmark Committee for review and approval of the restored or replaced building elements.
The exterior restoration involves masonry cleaning of brick and limestone, and full replacement of windows to their original 1938 design. An 8’ high by 20’ deep inaccessible plaza which surrounds three sides of the building will have new adjacent handicapped parking and becomes accessible to three monumental entrances creating a park like plaza. Five 18’ square limestone clad pergolas are designed for corner points of the plaza. These open-air educational structures featuring changing exhibits, are connected by new walkways with new site lighting, outdoor furniture and landscaping to be utilized and enjoyed by the public and building employees.
