The Kentucky Clinic houses some of the most active medical clinics in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Located in a building that JRA originally designed in the 70’s, the Kentucky Neuroscience Institute serves a vital function for patients seeking help with many different types of neurological disorders.
The challenge given to JRA was to upgrade the image of the clinics using this project as a prototype for the eventual renovation of the rest of the building. The goal was to make the space promote healing for the patients. Many different techniques were used. A warm and inviting color palette provides a soothing background to all that happens in the clinic. Earth-friendly materials gives the patient the sense that they are not in an institution but in a healing place. The flow of the spaces is another subtle hint that something special is happening in the space. A healing garden was added off of the waiting room to reduce patient and family stress.
The exam rooms were carefully planned. Mock-ups were employed so that the caregivers would know exactly how the room would function and to allow them to actually move medical items to more efficient locations. Patients, families and staff were all considered in the planning of the clinic. JRA used its accelerated and interactive planning process so that the staff would be presented with all of the options and would know the strengths and weaknesses of each.
In the end, KNI is a wonderful place that will serve the patients and the University of Kentucky well.
