Louisville, Kentucky
This project provided a new space for the University of Louisville Hospital’s existing Inpatient Psychiatry Unit. Much of the design focused on providing a structured, calm and safe environment for the patients, family members and staff, while simultaneously providing an environment that was not ‘institutional’, but rather an advocate of the patient’s dignity and healing.
The size of the unit was increased to 13, 800+/-SF, and included 20 patient rooms (10-General psych rooms, and 10-Medical psych rooms). Furthermore, the renovation included large and small day rooms for group and individual therapy, which included attributes of openness, natural light and prominent staff visual control. A skylight room was also introduced to serve as a special flex space for a variety of patient therapies.
