WESTERN KENTUCKY VETERANS CENTER
This new 120 bed nursing home provides high quality geriatric care to the states elderly veterans. Ninety beds are used for general admission and primarily contained in semi-private rooms each with lavatory, wardrobes and an adjoining toilet room. Thirty beds are used for residents afflicted with Alzheimer’s disease and are contained in private rooms also with lavatory, wardrobe and adjoining toilet room. Appropriate ancillary spaces include food service and dining, activity and recreation, therapy, laundry, housekeeping, social services and medical support, administration and maintenance. Outdoor spaces were developed to address the needs of a predominantly male population.
The new one story facility is located west of the center of the site for optimum balance of cut and fill and allows for good presentation of the facility entrance and front elevation to those approaching from the Parkway. The large central element contains administrative, multi-purpose, medical support, gift shop, activities and recreation, therapy, dining, library, barber shop and chapel spaces. The 30-bed special care nursing unit is an attached wing to one side and support spaces including pharmacy, maintenance, laundry, housekeeping, employee facilities, food service, day care, security, mechanical, and storage are in the attached wing on the other side. two 45-bed general admission nursing units are attached opposite the main entry. The facility consists of a total of 85,695 gross square feet in building area.
