MAKING PATIENT EXPERIENCE OUR PRIORITY

UK HealthCare Markey Cancer Center

As the only cancer center in Kentucky designated by the National Cancer Institute, the UK Markey Cancer Center plays an integral role in our community’s fight against the disease. Continuous improvement is critical to the institution in order to maintain the level of care its patients expect and deserve.

JRA Architects partnered with the Center to reimagine its space to accommodate the facility’s increasing patient visits - now totalling over 100,000 per year - and to improve the patient experience and outcomes during such difficult times.

What we set out to do

Create a space to better meet the emotional needs of patients and families while upgrading technologies to more effectively fight cancer.

JRA and Markey Cancer Center stakeholders toured peer facilities across the country exploring best practices to better inform our design and planning decisions.

Maintain the facility’s seamless workflow and care through diligent planning in advance of the construction phase which included consideration of materials to ensure patient and staff safety.

Given the critical nature of cancer care, JRA and the Center researched cutting edge equipment including the purchase and installation of the newest linear accelerators (Halcyon) in the industry.

WHAT RESULTED IS A SPACE WHERE CANCER PATIENTS BEGIN THEIR ROADS TO RECOVERY.

The redesigned floor plan affords doctors and staff the most efficient workflow to help ensure quality care.

Through EXPERIENCE

JRA’s expertise in healthcare, through the design of similar cancer care spaces, expedited and facilitated a complex project with no margin for error.

Through USER-CENTERED DESIGN

A collaborative orientation phase which included patients, staff and doctors uncovered the wants and needs of all parties to better inform our approach to design.
