Alice Lloyd College Cushing Hall
Since 1923, Alice Lloyd College has been providing education to an underserved population of America within the Appalachian Mountains. One of the flagship buildings of the college, Cushing Hall, needed more than a renovation—it needed a revival.
JRA Architects surveyed the building that had remained in disrepair and dormant for years, only to find little with which to work. Working closely with the administration, JRA developed a new design program to create a multi-functional space for the entire campus to enjoy through a new assembly hall, classrooms, office spaces and a campus café. By applying a “craftsman-like” aesthetic to the interior, we effectively complemented the building’s facade which replicated the spirit of the original design, including salvaging the existing stone.
Now, after careful planning and execution, students and faculty gather under the high-beam ceilings in the inviting halls of a reimagined piece of Appalachian history.
