Patient-Centered Design

Hardin Memorial Hospital Cancer Care Center

Hardin Memorial Hospital Cancer Care Center

The Hardin Memorial Cancer Care Center was originally situated in the lower level of the main hospital which inherently lacked natural light and, as a result, lacked a welcoming space so important to a patient’s mindset. Couple that with inconvenient parking and a limited capacity to grow, the need to relocate the Center to a new space had become increasingly apparent. JRA Architects, long-time partners with Hardin Memorial, was asked to help create a new facility to better suit the needs of the community.

Our new dedicated facility now exudes patient comfort and convenience, serves as a signboard for the program in the community, and affords more flexibility for future growth and technology. A patient feedback program informed our design and planning decisions including the integration of features like new infusion furniture and calming environmental wall graphics that also serve as privacy enhancers. The graphics used throughout the space were taken by local community members as a part of an innovative hospital outreach program. An open-plan arrangement for the treatment area allows nurses to monitor their patients more efficiently. Bold, uplifting colors accent the space, while wood tones provide a warm, comforting background in each room. A new, state-of-the-art pharmacy sits at the heart of the building, minimizing patient treatment wait times.

When undergoing cancer treatments at the Center, patients and their families now receive as much relief, peace, and convenience as possible at Hardin Memorial Hospital.
