University of Louisville Hospital 6 South

University of Louisville Hospital 6 South

Situated in the heart of downtown Louisville, the University of Louisville Hospital has been serving the community for nearly 200 years. In order to continue meeting their mission to provide compassionate, high-quality medical care, the Intermediate Care Unit of the facility needed an overhaul. This space is dedicated to those patients in need of greater attention than that of the general medical services unit, but that require less care than those in the Intensive Care Unit.

JRA participated in design collaboration meetings with doctors, staff, and patients and their family members in order to gain first-hand accounts of ways to improve the patient experience. JRA gleaned valuable insights that helped inform all of our design decisions, resulting in a more efficient, healing environment. The overall redesign included 8,500 square feet and consisted of 16 patient rooms and the nursing unit’s related support spaces.

Today, the Intermediate Care Unit patients receive the highest quality care within a modern, comfortable environment that feels more like “home” than a hospital.
