Serving Those Who Serve

VA Medical Center Surgical Intensive Care Unit

VA Medical Center Surgical Intensive Care Unit

Since 1952, Louisville’s VA Medical Center (VAMC) has provided quality healthcare to the service men and women of our nation’s military. JRA Architects, with our extensive healthcare design experience and history of working with the VAMC, was chosen to help the hospital improve its Surgical Intensive Care Unit. We started our work - as always - by conducting interviews with key stakeholders to better understand the needs of patients and staff alike.

The newly renovated unit contains nine patient rooms. Each room includes extensive infection-control procedures along with bariatric patient lifts to improve accessibility. The entire unit received a significant overhaul from an aesthetic perspective in order to provide greater comfort to patients and their families. During the discovery process it was determined we had to plan construction implementation carefully as the facility provides around-the-clock care that cannot be interrupted. Proper planning and oversight of our contractors resulted in uninterrupted care for the patients.

This renovated Surgical Intensive Care Unit offered JRA the opportunity to help the Louisville community, but also to give something back to the amazing veterans who serve our country.
