University of Kentucky Sports Medicine Research

The University of Kentucky Sports Medicine Research Institute (SMRI) is a research center with a mission to “conduct interdisciplinary research to optimize the prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation of injuries and performance”. The 10,000 square foot center is the only one of its kind within 400 miles of Lexington, Kentucky, and is used by professional and collegiate athletes as well as members of the United States Military throughout the region. Over time the facility began to show its age and UK decided an investment in facility upgrades was needed, so JRA Architects was asked to help re-invigorate the space.

JRA worked closely with members of UK Athletics and the UK Sports Medicine Research Institute to develop a plan to create a fresher, more modern look. The renovation includes application of UK athletics “finishes” throughout the space to complement other UK athletic facilities, updated locker rooms, and a dedicated sports nutrition area. We also integrated LED lighting and a new HVAC system to make the space more sustainable.
